What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is open to all young people aged 14-24. There are three different levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold – and it takes six to 12 months to complete, depending on the level.

To get the Award you must complete a programme of activities in four different categories – Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and Residential (Gold only). You will be expected to spend one hour a week on each different activity to complete the programme successfully.

Why do the Award?

There are lots of reasons for completing the DofE Award.

It gives you the opportunity to try new things, meet new people and have some great experiences that you will remember for the rest of your life. You will also get a great sense of satisfaction from setting yourself challenges and meeting your goals.

Completing the Award shows employers and universities that you’re a positive, can-do person with organisational skills who can work with other people. This is just as important as good grades at school or college.

Lastly, it’s a fantastic opportunity to do something to help other people – whether it’s an individual or your local community.
